The congregation of Pergamum
“To the angel of the congregation in Pergamum write: These are the things that he says who has the sharp, long, two-edged sword: ‘I know where you are dwelling, that is, where the throne of Satan is; and yet you keep holding fast to my name, and you did not deny your faith in me even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was killed by your side, where Satan is dwelling. “‘Nevertheless, I have a few things against you, that you have there those adhering to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality. In the same way, you also have those adhering to the teaching of the sect of Nicolaus. So repent. If you do not, I am coming to you quickly, and I will war against them with the long sword of my mouth.
“‘Let the one who has an ear hear what the spirit says to the congregations: To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white pebble, and written on the pebble is a new name that no one knows except the one receiving it.’ » (Apocalypse 2:12-17).
The Congregation of Pergamum had serious trials, like the Congregation of Smyrna, because Jesus Christ said about the death of one of his disciples. The expression « Antipas, my faithful witness, who was killed by your side, where Satan is dwelling », demonstrates that the death of a single faithful servant, for his faith, is precious at the same time, in the eyes of Jehovah God, the Father and his Son Jesus Christ: « Precious in the eyes of Jehovah Is the death of his loyal ones » (Psalms 116:15).
The problem of the congregation Pergamum was that they allowed the infiltration of libertarian behavior, both in the field of sexual immorality and sectarian teaching. The consequences of Balaam’s teaching are written in the narrative of Numbers chapter 25, about the Israelites committing fornication with the Moabites women.
The fornication is sexual practices condemned in the Bible, the Word of God: The adultery, the sexual relations without being married (Man and Woman), the masculine and feminine homosexuality, the bestiality: « Or do you not know that unrighteous people will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Do not be misled. Those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who submit to homosexual acts, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners will not inherit God’s Kingdom” (1 Corinthians 6:9,10). “Let marriage be honorable among all, and let the marriage bed be without defilement, for God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers” (Hebrews 13:4).
We remember that on the biblical camp, a sect is a spirituality which goes beyond the teaching of the good news, while presenting itself, in a fraudulent way, as a biblical teaching (Galatians 1:8,9). Jesus Christ foretold that there would be several centuries of apostasy that would permeate Christianity (Matthew 13:24-30,37-43). The consequence is that the Christian priesthood, and its teaching has been imbued with Babylonian practices and teachings, such as pagan holidays like Christmas, Easter (different from the Jewish Passover), All Saints’ Day, or even pagan teachings such as the Marian worship, the idolatrous worship of saints, the trinity, the immortality of the soul, fiery hell, the worship of the cross which thrones in many Christian congregations… All these pagan teachings of Babylonian or Greco-Roman origin, have no place in true worship (John 4:23,24).
While sincere Christians have been ignorant of such a situation for centuries, it is important that we purify the way we worship God and serve Jesus Christ, gradually removing all forms of unwanted spiritual practices in the eyes of God.
